MISSION
Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, UK supports and advances art by women, past and present, with a connection to the United Kingdom.
Friends of NMWA, UK was established as a UK charity in 2006. It is part of a growing international network supporting the mission of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Located in Washington, DC, the museum brings recognition to the art by women of all periods and nationalities by exhibiting, preserving, acquiring and researching art by women, and by educating the public about the women’s accomplishments.Friends of NMWA, UK
- organizes events highlighting the accomplishments of women artists
- publishes a monthly e-newsletter presenting the charity’s events as well as an extensive listing and description of exhibitions featuring women artists throughout the UK
- helps UK-based art by women achieve international recognition with NMWA’s Women to Watch programme
- has established a bursary fund to support its charitable purposes including education and research.
Friends of NMWA, UK events cover contemporary as well as historical women artists and include discussions with artists, private visits to museums, galleries and private collections, studio visits and lectures. Recent events:
- Panel discussion on “The Figure Re-Figured” in conjunction with Women to Watch 2010
- Guided private lecture on women artists at the Tate
- Breakfast and curator-led tour of the National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition Brilliant Women: 18th Century Bluestockings
- Paula Rego and Marco Livingstone in conversation in conjunction with NMWA’s retrospective of Paula’s work
- Private discussions with sculptor Helaine Blumenfeld, painter and ceramicist Charlotte Hodes and photographer Elisa Sighicelli
- Symposium on British Women Collectors.
- Private visit with curator to Flora and Fauna: Drawings by Maria Sybilla Merian and her daughters
- Pre-opening reception with photographer Susan Derges.
