The Royal Academy Schools Summer Exhibition

Talk and private tour with Maurice Cockrill, Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools

June 15th 2006, 10:30am

The Royal Academy of Arts
Burlington House, Piccadilly
London W1J 0BD

When Sir Joshua Reynolds and his contemporaries founded the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1768, one of their objectives was to foster the training and ambitions of future generations of British artists. They accomplished this by establishing the Royal Academy Schools, Britain’s first (and still free) art school. The RA programme offers students a unique three-year postgraduate degree. The 20 third year students at the RA Schools showcase their art, exhibited in their studios, during the annual RA Schools Show. Maurice Cockrill, Keeper of the RA Schools, offered us a very special tour and talk, providing a unique ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at the work of these emerging young artists.

Dr. Alison Thomas speaking on
Lady Edna Clarke Hall (1879-1979)

November 8th 2006

Abbott and Holder Ltd.
30 Museum Street
London WC1A 1LH

Lady Edna Clark Hall was a contemporary of Gwen and Augustus John at The Slade School of Art. Clark Hall flourished under the disciplined regime of the accomplished draughtsman Henry Tonks. Unusually among his female students – with Gwen John being the other notable exception – she continued to develop as an artist once the structure and support of art school discipline were removed. The 60 works on display at Abbott and Holder were selected from the collection of her son, and concentrate on summers spent at the family cottage at Gillan Creek in remotest Cornwall, and date from 1915 to 1925. Dr. Alison Thomas has written on both Edna Clark Hall and Gwen John, and is an authority on their art and the period. Abbott and Holder, established in 1936, are dealers in watercolours, drawings and prints.
